Hi {{first_name|there}},
Last liver email of the month, and a short one, because tonight is the start of a two-month stretch where the liver works overtime.
Two things the liver handles
Alcohol goes to the liver first. It gets priority over everything else, including the fat and sugar you ate with it, which wait their turn and get stored. Sugar in large doses, especially fructose, is also processed in the liver, and the extra gets stored the same way.
Neither is a problem on one night. The holidays aren't one night.
What helps the liver keep up
Protein and fiber before the sugar, so it arrives slower. Water between drinks. A real gap between the last drink and sleep, since the liver does much of its repair work overnight. And the one Nurse Doza always says: a few days in a row with none of it, so the liver gets a turn.
Severe pain under the right ribs, a fever, or yellowing of your skin or eyes needs medical care right away.
Questions worth bringing to your next visit
Is there anything on my labs that says I should be careful with alcohol?
How would I know if the holidays were showing up on my liver panel?
What should I ask for on a January draw?
